Goodbye, Farewell, Adieu, dear friends, I’m off.

A blog is like a garden, it needs constant tending or it tends to choke and grow stagnant. I’ve been finding lately that my blog is taking up too much of my time.  It took me ten minutes just to craft the handful of sentences you’re reading. This is because it is a strain now that I know some people are reading what I write. My life seems to revolve around the blog these days.  I check out my stats and hits and watch a bunch of views go from 50 to zero after midnight and I panic. What if nobody visits today?

It was different when I began. I wrote a piece and posted it and that was that. Whenever the urge took me I would write another and post that. It could be days, or weeks even before inspiration struck. I was writing for myself, after all. Nobody cared.

I’m going to miss the view by country section. There’s the US and Canada, but I seem to be building up a following from Australia which is where I come from and someone from the Philippines drops in now and again and the UK. Today there’s someone from Poland and the Republic of K. Not sure where K is but do let me know, person of K. I still find it fascinating how we get together from all over the world. Unlike younger people who have grown up with it, I really can’t be blasé about the internet. I don’t necessarily like everything about it but I have definitely liked blogging.

Since taking up challenges my writing has improved. There’s less of it because I don’t take weeks or months the way I used to do, thinking about an idea and the angle it should take and researching facts where necessary. But what the challenges have done for me has been to get me thinking faster on my feet.

When I first began I wrote exclusively about my experiences as a mother and grandmother (mostly the latter). But I think that after a while it dawned on me that I should (and could) widen my horizons. I was influenced by what other people did and entertained by what they said. That’s certainly something I’m going to take with me when I leave this blog.

I’d like to introduce you to some of the people who have taught me things and who I’ve become fond of:

There are more that I visit and like and if I make a comeback I’ll mention them too. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy. I certainly have.

  2. Mary, I read some of this last week when I was in the throes of writing and didn’t have time to read all or respond. I saw you were going to quit blogging, and my heart sank. But then I remembered you got me with the back cover of a book, so I looked at the bottom of your post quickly and saw you were writing for a challenge. Hahaha! You almost had me again! A testament to your writing ability! Thank you so much for thinking enough our exchanges to include me in your list. Hugs.

    • Thanks, S, I’m much too much of a ham to give it up yet. And I have been learnng a lot. But it is true that there’s a constant need to feed the beast and I’m only doing half the job.
