All this time I was under the impression that Paul Simon wrote the lyrics to this song. I was wrong. Last night I had the strangest dream was written by Ed McCurdy who wrote the anti-war song in 1950. Wikipedia says that it inspired and gave hope to those in the peace movement. Ironically, McMurdy died in 2000.
I guess the peace movement is still hoping because things are worse today than ever they were. As this isn’t that sort of blog I won’t go into a rant. I’ll just leave you to enjoy the lyrics as I have, most recently. I’ve been listening on my iPod and singing along and getting weird looks from fellow passengers on the train. But I don’t care.
Last Night I Had The Strangest Dream
words and music by Ed McCurdy
Last night I had the strangest dream
I’d ever dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war
I dreamed I saw a mighty room
Filled with women and men
And the paper they were signing said
They’d never fight again
And when the paper was all signed
And a million copies made
They all joined hands and bowed their heads
And grateful pray’rs were prayed
And the people in the streets below
Were dancing ’round and ’round
While swords and guns and uniforms
Were scattered on the ground
Last night I had the strangest dream
I’d never dreamed before
I dreamed the world had all agreed
To put an end to war.
Mary, would you believe I have never heard this song before. I just listened to it on YouTube, and it wasn’t familiar at all … but a really nice tune and good lyrics.
Wish I’d written it. Were you a Simon and Garfunkle fan when you were in your teens?
Great song – there wouldn’t be any wars if nobody showed up to fight them.
How nice would that be for our children and grandchildren.
