There was an advertisement for creative visionaries on television, I can’t tell you much more than that because I usually zone out when advertisements come on. But these words caught my attention: ‘There is no magic in this, this is work,’ said Annie Leibovitz. I’m a big fan of her work so I sat up straight and took notice. She was telling us civilians that there’s more to photography than just aiming a camera and asking people to say cheese.
As this civilian is a writer, she gets it. Not that I’m comparing myself in any way to the brilliant Leibovitz. And I speak only for myself when I describe the messy way I get from the beginning to the end of a process. Here it is for what it’s worth. First there’s the idea, then there’s the angle, the research, the draft, the re-direction and several more drafts. I read it and make changes as I go, I attempt to read it right through without stopping, I read it aloud, also attempting to go through to the end without stopping. Occasionally I succeed. When it’s all done I find the right market for it and send my child off to some editor and hope for the best. Some people write what inspires them to write then look for the market that will suit (that’s me), others choose a magazine that appeals to them and will write an article. It takes time to hear whether or not a submission has been successful and time before it is published and time before you get to invoice for payment. In this case, being the editor of my own blog, I post my article and hope to hear from readers.
I accept all my submissions which is a buzz, but the readers seem to have taken the place of former editors. That’s why I’ve decided to focus on the recipes section for a while. I’m not doing it because I can possibly compete with some of the fantastic recipe sites I visit. If you do it right, there’s a lot of work involved. I just want to keep my hand in so I’m pretty much only going to offer recipes and not worry about who is visiting and who is not.
Hope you will check me out at: http://sugarnspiceallthingsnice.wordpress.com/ I’ve been pretty neglectful of it, but give me a week till my time is my own again and I’ll make it up to you.
